"Moving On" with Kat Fieler - Fitness Training; Breast Cancer Recovery; and Zumba
“You have breast cancer.”

Those words are life altering. The days after diagnosis are surreal and scary.  Then you begin treatment, and it’s tough to accept that the cure makes you feel so awful, because you felt just fine before you knew anything was wrong.

“Can” is in the word cancer."

There are things you can do to improve your quality of life, during treatment and for the future.  Breast Cancer Recovery Class is designed to teach you what you can do to reclaim your functional ability, deal with the side effects of treatment, reduce your risk of lymphedema, and reduce your risk of recurrent cancer.  The program has been reviewed and endorsed by oncologists and oncology professionals all over Florida.  See the "Endorsements" link for letters of reference.

I am a breast cancer survivor too. I am also a personal trainer; a Breast Cancer Recovery Coach; a certified Zumba instructor; and an active participant with a number of Breast Cancer Awareness and Advocacy groups.

During my own treatment, my oncologist asked if I had considered using my knowledge as a personal trainer to specialize in breast cancer recovery. I hadn’t, but I was instantly inspired to make it a reality, because I learned why doctors have been reluctant to suggest exercise to breast cancer patients:

  • Many fitness professionals are focused on body sculpting rather than recuperation from an illness.
  • Most fitness professionals have no specific training regarding the damage that's done to the body during breast cancer surgery and treatment, and are thus uninformed about the specific needs of clients who are recovering from breast cancer.
  • The the mega-gym environment is often emotionally difficult for women who have lost their hair or a breast.
  • The mega-gym environment can pose potential health risks for anyone with a compromised immune system.

But times and attitudes are changing. These days more and more physicians are actually recommending exercise, as long as it's done appropriately and in the right environment, with a qualified trainer. BREAST CANCER RECOVERY CLASS
WHAT TO EXPECT

  • FELLOWSHIP: There’s a reason your cancer team probably gave you a list of support groups. Evidence suggests that seeking people in your situation is an instinctive response, and a healthy one. But it’s very important to find a group that meets your needs. Breast Cancer Recovery Class provides women with a safe environment in which to work through the physical damage that is often an inevitable result of treatment, and it is a good place to find other women who believe in being proactive.
  • RELAXATION TECHNIQUES – EXERCISES FOR THE MIND AND SPIRIT: Learning relaxation techniques will help you manage pain, nausea, fatigue, anxiety and depression.
  • REGAINING YOUR POWER – EXERCISES FOR PHYSICAL RECOVERY: The goal of a breast cancer exercise routine is to develop and maintain adequate flexibility of the chest, auxiliary region, and shoulders.  Mastering these exercises will help you more easily perform the activities of daily living, such as washing your hair, hooking your bra, and reaching up to get something from a shelf.

Breast Cancer Recovery Class is open to Survivors and Women Currently in Treatment.

NOTE:Because space is limited, pre-registration is required.
